We went to celebrate my mum’s belated birthday for dinner last evening. Brought her to 乐食轩, located opposite Central@Clark Quay, where my boss took us out for lunch a month ago. The highlight was really the deep fried pork knuckle. The six of us ordered a good 10 dishes, here’s what we ate, in order of my preference:
1) Yam rice–wrapped & cooked in lotus leaf. It was surprisingly sweet & fragrant. Luckily we ordered this during the second round.
2) Duck soup咸菜鸭汤–it’s a traditional dish & the preserved vegetables wasn’t mushy and soft like what some stalls serve.
3) Deep fried pork knuckle–i don’t really like roast pork except char siew because of the sweet taste. This is probably the first deep fried pork dish that I like, considering that I’m not a fan of pork. The skin was crispy and the layers of fat melted in your mouth. It was really good. According to the boss, it was fried & cooked four times in vegetable oil.
4) Claypot chicken rice–I swear I would scrape off the 锅巴 if the restaurant wasn’t that crowded. I haven’t had such good claypot rice for many years.
5) BBQ cuttlefish–I’m a cuttlefish lover. The cuttlefish was just nice & not chewy, tough. It’s the next most expensive dish after the pork knuckle.
6) Salted fish eggplant–This is also a highly recommended dish by many diners. I like eggplant so it’s something I would order. But I couldn’t really taste the salted fish although my mum and brother could taste it.
7) Sambal ladies finger–I like this vegetable dish, it has wok-hei锅气, just that it simply pales in comparison when the other dishes are so outstanding.
8) Hot plate beancurd–KY ordered this dish. Didn’t find it spectacular but still better than some of the zi – char places.
9) Butter oatmeal beancurd–A spin-off from oatmeal prawns.
10) Emperor sprouts–I’m surprised my mum ordered this dish. She had always liked the vegetable but says that sometimes it’s difficult to find in market nowadays.
With my 2 hungry brothers around, it was just simply not possible to take pictures. I would very much like to take a picture of the pork knuckle but the boss introduced the dish & helped us cut it into pieces before I could attempt to do so. Except for the hot plate beancurd, oatmeal beancurd and the emperor sprouts, the rest are all highly recommended by diners. Good to be able to try all in a single sitting.
The dinner was pretty affordable and the bill came up to less than $130 as there’s no service charge or GST.
